Peavey Electronics' work advocating afterschool programs for children and teenagers has won a Mississippi Economic Development Council award and thousands of dollars in grant money for Lauderdale County.

"Lights On Afterschool Meridian," featuring the "Afterschool (Not) Idle" youth singing competition, won a Community Economic Development Award from the MEDC for its success in drawing attention to the importance of afterschool programs. As part of the award, Lauderdale County will receive a $7,500 Economic Development Marketing Grant from the Mississippi Development Authority.

Meridian-based Mary Peavey has been named to the National Afterschool Alliance Board of Directors. Peavey is the President of Peavey Electronics Corporation, one of the world's top makers of musical instruments and sound equipment.

Mary Peavey has been an active supporter of afterschool programs and the Afterschool Alliance since 2005, and helped make history last year when she was part of the team that helped make Mississippi the first state to offer a car tag that benefits afterschool programs. The new tags carry the slogan, "Afterschool is Key."
